Teams and Divisions
Please register as an individual. The rally organizer will put together all teams. Expect to scramble with members from other clubs and various ages/levels. There are no stable managers in tetrathlon, and members sharing/borrowing the same horse must be on the same team, but do not need to be in the same division.
Division selection should be based on age and certification level over fences. You may choose to jump lower, run shorter, or swim shorter than your division for a slight penalty in points. This option is highly recommended if there is any question about the max jumping height with your mount to ensure you are having a safe and fun experience.
HorseMasters are welcome and may be competing on the same team as youth members, however they will be in their own division.
Any unmounted competitors will be competing in the Stick Horse division. The Stick Horse division will be competeing under modified HM rules.

Directions
For the best possible directions, use Google Maps (do not use regualr GPS, MapQuest, or Apple Maps, for some reason, those programs seem to think Critter Trail is about 1/4 mile to the North, and you'll end up heading down a windy dirt driveway without a good way to turn around a horse trailer. Critter Trail is a relatively straight dirt road. Unfortunately the road is not well marked. Just north of the dirt road will be a group of mail boxes. The closest mailbox to the corner will say 1539 Critter Trail - Wisseman. It is grey with white painted swirls. The barn is about 1/2 mile down the road on the right. Follow the signs for parking.
If coming from the North:
Take US-31 South through Manistee. Turn right at Merkey Rd, there will be a Wendy's on the corner. Turn left the 4-way stop at Maple Rd. Head south about 2 miles and turn right onto Critter Trail. If you get to Fox Farm, you went to far.
If coming from the South:
Get to US-31 North toward Ludington (probably via I-96 through Grand Rapids). You will need to exit the highway at 170A and turn right, follow US-10/US-31 about 4.5 miles and then turn left at the blinking red light to continue on US-31 North. Drive about 17 miles and turn left onto Fox Farm Rd. Turn right onto Maple Rd. and drive about 1/2 mile. Turn left onto Critter Trail. If you get to Old Maple, you went to far.

Lodging
Early arrival on Friday is encouraged so competitors can take part in a shooting range safety session Friday evening. Rustic camping on site is offered at no charge, or there are several nice hotels, motels, and B&B's in the area.
What is Tetrathlon?
Tetrathlon is a sport requiring skill, focus, and physical endurance.
It includes four phases of competition: riding a mount over a course of obstacles, shooting an air pistol at a target 10m away, running cross country and swimming. USPC Tetrathlon is the gateway to Modern Pentathlon, an olympic sport.

Gate: Riders approach the obstacle between the cones, open the gate while mounted, ride through the gate, close it, and continue the course.
Drop Fence: Riders approach the obstacle between the cones, dismount, drop the top rail of the fence to the ground, lead their horse over the obstacle, replace the rail, remount, and continue the course. |
The riding phase of Tetrathlon is similar to show jumping with the addition of two unique obstacles, the gate and the drop fence.
Footing will be grass unless the indoor arena is utilized due to weather. The maximum jumping height and allowed time will be based on the competitor's division. You are encouraged to ride down to a jumping height that is comfortable for you and your mount. Riders who opt to ride down will receive a small penalty to their score, but the adjustment is worth it to have a safe and positive experience. Competitors should wear polos and conservative color breeches, show attire is not expected. |
The running phase is essentially a timed run through wooded trails at the rally location.
The distance each competitor runs will be based on their division. 3000m (1.9 miles) is the longest distance. You may opt to run down for a penalty adjustment to your final score. Competitors should wear comfortable running shoes and clothes. |
The swimming phase will take place in a 25 yard pool.
The distance each competitor swims will be based on their division. 200 yards is the longest distance. You may opt to swim down for a penalty adjustment to your final score. If you are not a strong swimmer, you may swim with a life jacket at no penalty for this non-qualifying rally. Competitors should bring their own towel and swim in a racing style swim suit. Two-piece suits are not allowed per the USPC Tetrathlon Rulebook. |
Only approved air guns & ammunition in a locked case will be allowed, so please double check the USPC Tethrathlon Rulebook for guidelines if purchasing a new air pistol.
If you do not have an air pistol and would like to borrow one, please let us know during your registration. |
The shooting phase involves using an air pistol to hit a target 10m away. The range is located on site and natrually bermed for maximum safety. Setting up targets, firing pistols, and retrieving targets is directed by the Range Master.
Competitors shoot five shots at a time toward their target. For a total of 20 shots. One practice round is allowed prior to the official rounds. The scoring is based on standard 10m target competition rules. Typically competitors will shoot standing, one handed, however younger competitors may shoot two handed or seated depending on their division guidelines. All competitors should attend the Range Safety Session either Friday evening or Saturday morning before the competition begins. Competitors should wear polos, safety glasses will be provided or you may bring your own. |
